VOB 101 - Certified Residential Interior Designer Part 1


This course is designed to prepare the student for a career as a residential interior designer and to prepare the student for the Certified Residential Interior Designer Education (R.I.D.E.) exam. Topics to be covered include the fundamentals and ethical practices involved in becoming a residential interior designer; the basics of good design; design styles and movements; materials that interior designers use; development of a concept
portfolio; and design concept for a family room.

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. ​​​​explain design basics;
2. create a design concept and floor plan;
3. describe space planning;
4. discuss the history of styles and furnishings from prehistoric times to the Middle
Ages;
5. discuss the history of styles and furnishings from the Renaissance to the 20th century;
6. discuss the history of styles and furnishings of modernism;
7. explain non-European influences and furniture styles on interior design;
8. describe various materials used in residential interior design;
9. describe the uses of color in designing residential interiors;
10. describe the uses of textiles in designing residential interiors;
11. explain the uses of accents and accessories in designing residential interiors;
12. list the steps required to work as a residential interior designer and start your own
design business;
13. list residential interior design industry regulations;
14. create a portfolio; and
15. complete the Residential Interior Designer Education exam.​​

  Note: The Certified Residential Interior Designer credential should not be confused with the Certified Interior Designer status certified and regulated by the Maryland State Board of Certified Interior Designers. This program does not meet the education and experience requirements necessary for Maryland State Certification.
