PCO 283 - Google IT Support Professional


10 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the student to prepare for a role as an entry-level IT Support Specialist. Students learn the fundamentals of IT support that are critical for success in the workplace – like troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration, and security. Topics to be covered include: technical support fundamentals, bits and bytes of computer networking, operating systems, becoming a power user, system administration, IT infrastructure services, and IT security.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. ​​assemble a computer from scratch and install an operating system;
  2. define what the internet is, how it works, and the impact it has in the modern world;
  3. describe computer networks in terms of a five-layer model;
  4. discuss cloud computing and cloud storage;
  5. demonstrate the ability to navigate the Windows and Linux filesystems;
  6. set up users, groups, and permissions for account access;
  7. install, configure, and remove software on the Windows and Linux operating systems;
  8. utilize operating system knowledge to troubleshoot common issues in an IT Support Specialist role;
  9. demonstrate the ability to backup data and know how to recover IT infrastructure in the case of a disaster;
  10. evaluate potential risks and recommend ways to reduce risk; and
  11. discuss best practices for securing a network.
