MGT 789 - Fostering Diversity and Sensitivity in the Workplace

This course is designed to enable the student to improve their knowledge about diversity in the workplace and how to promote it in their position as a manager or supervisor. Topics to be covered include: how attitudes and beliefs impact perceptions, the forms and impacts of diversity in the workplace, methods to promote an inclusive work environment, managing work culture and environment, and managing diversity for organizational effectiveness.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. define cultural competence, cultural awareness, and cultural sensitivity;
2. describe the differences between stereotypes and generalizations of a culture;
3. identify personal attitudes and behaviors towards differences;
4. explain the role that management plays in creating a workplace where people of all cultures and backgrounds can succeed;
5. discuss the connection between diversity and sensitivity and an organization’s present and future success;
6. list ways to create an atmosphere of inclusion in the workplace; and
7. create an action plan to create an inclusive workplace.
