AHE 714 - Surgical Technology Capstone


4.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to provide the surgical technology student with additional tools to transition into a working professional.  Topics to be covered include clinical review and feedback, resume writing and interview skills, clinical preceptorship, professional continuing education, current developments in the profession, and review of assessment examination results.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. evaluate performance in a clinical setting;
  2. receive, evaluate, and apply constructive feedback;
  3. demonstrate appropriate constructive feedback techniques and articulate those techniques to others;
  4. write a professional resume and cover letter;
  5. demonstrate acceptable employment interview techniques;
  6. discuss the benefits of professional memberships and certification;
  7. discuss the benefits of professional continuing education;
  8. discuss current developments in the profession and the importance of active participation in the issues,
  9. describe the role of a clinical preceptor;
  10. identify and demonstrate positive preceptor attributes;
  11. prepare and present a final research project;
  12. interpret performance on the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting’s self-assessment examinations;
  13. implement a plan of action to review problematic areas of performance on the self-assessment examination; and
  14. identify traditional and non-traditional employment opportunities for the Surgical Technologist.
