Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.)

Statewide Program

Semester Sequence

This is a suggested full-time schedule for a student who has completed any developmental course work and has no transfer credits. Refer to the College catalog for specific requirements in selecting General Education Courses.

General Education Requirements and Electives - 22 Credits

Program Requirements and Electives - 38 Credits

Program Electives:

Choose 10 credits of electives.

Elective courses should be selected to meet transfer institution requirements.

Total Number of Credits Required for Degree: 60*

*Credit students who are new to college (no successfully completed college coursework at other institutions) are required to take ACDV 101  in the first semester at CCBC. This is a 1-credit class, and it does not count towards the number of credits required for a degree or certificate. Students are required to provide an official transcript(s) to document successful completion of college coursework at another institution(s) for this requirement to be waived.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this degree, students will be able to:

  1. practice the principles of geospatial applications through laboratory experience, client-based projects, internships and additional outside of class activities and discussions;
  2. determine how GIS can be used to visualize data in other disciplines (e.g., commerce, disaster management and response, politics, homeland security, planning and education, crime, etc.);
  3. evaluate spatial information gathered for timeliness, authority, accuracy, validity and completeness;
  4. prepare maps using GIS and remote sensing software to visually represent data and apply appropriate tools for spatial analysis; and
  5. describe and implement the steps in developing a GIS project and produce appropriate maps and reports.

Program Description

The Geospatial Applications program provides a comprehensive instruction in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), photogrammetry and remote sensing and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Geospatial techniques are used to aid in decision making in fields as diverse as business, marketing, homeland security, public policy, environment, engineering, public health, archeology and criminal justice by identifying patterns between graphical information (maps) and data. A unique aspect of the CCBC Geospatial program is the incorporation of real-world situations in all courses, starting at the introductory level. Students learn software and development techniques in a realistic environment.

The Associate of Applied Science degree is offered for students planning to transfer to a four year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree. The sequence of courses may be taken full or part time. Courses are offered both day and evening. Students may enter the program at a level commensurate with their experience.
