General Education Requirements:

Notes:

Students must be assessed according to the college’s Assessment/Placement policy before entering a course.

Students placed into ESOL courses must begin their ESOL coursework immediately within their first semester at CCBC. They may concurrently take non-ESOL courses which do NOT have ESOL prerequisites. Students must take at least one ESOL course each subsequent semester until completing the ESOL sequence. Students may not enroll in any other courses without concurrently enrolling in the ESOL courses necessary to complete the ESOL sequence. It is strongly recommended that students take all courses in each level simultaneously.

PLEASE NOTE: ESOL students are required to complete ACDV 101 . They may not enroll in ACDV 101  until they are eligible to take classes at the Advanced Level: ESOL 42 , ESOL 43  and ESOL 44 .*

*Exception: If a student who is enrolled in ESOL classes at CCBC has completed other credit coursework successfully at an accredited college or university within the United States as documented by an official college transcript, he/she is exempt from the ACDV 101  requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the English for Speakers of Other Languages Program, students will be able to:

  1. write paragraphs and essays that are academic in nature and that conform to the conventions of standard American English in terms of organization, sentence structure, grammar, and diction;
  2. apply second language reading strategies and critical thinking skills to understand and analyze college-level texts in a variety of content areas;
  3. comprehend the content and organization of college lectures and take notes that highlight major points; and
  4. apply the rules of English grammar and pronunciation to express ideas accurately and fluently in class discussion and group work.

Program Description:
