AHL 172 - Medicine Aide Continuing Education


.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This course is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed to enable the student to meet the Maryland Board of Nursing Certified Medicine Aide mandatory continuing education requirement. Topics to be covered include current state regulations related to the role of the medicine aide, uses, actions, and possible interactions of and related precautions for current medications used in the care of the geriatric patient as outlined in COMAR 10.39.03.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. state requirements for certification as CMA in Maryland and scope of responsibility as outlined by COMAR,
2. identify when a delegated task should or should not be performed by the CMA,
3. list the delegated nursing functions a CMA may perform,
4. define re-delegation,
5. list and describe at least two drug references available today,
6. discuss medications commonly prescribed to the elderly that may exacerbate a Disease or Syndrome,
7. discuss Maryland’s Health Information Exchange (HIE) system CRISP,
8. view and discuss CRISP long-term care video,
9. discuss how CRISP may lessen risk of Drug-Drug interactions,
10. discuss effects of drugs on Nutritional Disorders,
11. recognize when and how to report errors,
12. discuss Medication Documentation,
13. identify accepted abbreviations, and
14. state documentation requirements for medication administration.
