AHE 526 - PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)


1.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU). This class is not for Credit(s).

This course is designed for healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children and for personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care, and critical care units. Topics include essential issues of advanced pediatric resuscitation for health care professionals; high-quality child CPR AED and infant CPR; recognition of patients who do and do not require immediate intervention; signs of cardiopulmonary arrest; and early interventions for respiratory distress/failure and treatment of shock.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. perform high-quality child CPR AED and infant CPR; 2. recognize patients who do and do not require immediate intervention; 3. recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and application of CPR within 10 seconds; 4. apply team dynamics; 5. differentiate between respiratory distress and failure; 6. identify interventions for respiratory distress and failure; 7. differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock; 8. list interventions for the treatment of shock; 9. differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias; 10. identify characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias; and 11. perform post–cardiac arrest management.
