This course is designed to enable the student in non-clinical healthcare to gain a basic understanding of medical terminology used in healthcare settings. Topics to be covered include pronunciation; anatomy structures; word roots, suffixes, and prefixes; use of terminology in an administrative healthcare setting.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
1. demonstrate correct spelling and pronunciation of medical terms;
2. define medical terminology word roots, prefixes, and suffixes;
3. identify the correct medical term when given a definition;
4. demonstrate the ability to understand reports that use medical terms and
abbreviations;
5. explain the importance of using correct terminology when working with other
healthcare professionals; and
6. explain the importance of being able to translate medical terminology for patients’
understanding.
