  • HIST 211 - Social and Cultural History of American Warfare: 1775-1902

    Examines the history of American warfare from 1775-1902 from a social and cultural perspective. This is NOT a traditional military history class. It explores the wartime experience of average Americans, the men and women who serve the military as well as civilians on the home front. It also analyzes the impact of war on American society in general, paying particular attention to the challenges that war has posed to democratic principles and institutions and to the ways in which various wars have been represented and remembered in public spaces and in popular culture. Topics will include: the treatment of prisoners, the use of propaganda; changes in military technology and medicine; civil liberties in wartime; and the treatment and role of women, minorities, draft-resistors and opponents of war.   • HSTO 101 - Laboratory Operations and Instrumentation


    2 Credit(s).

    Provides an overview of laboratory operations and instrumentation in a histology laboratory. This includes workflow, regulations and procedures, quality control,biological, chemical and infectious hazards, storage and disposal of chemicals, acids and bases. Instrumentation utilized in the histology laboratory is covered, as well as the maintenance, troubleshooting and quality control of equipment. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HSTO 102 - Histology Laboratory Techniques


    1 Credit(s).

    Introduces the theoretical and practical aspects of histology. Laboratory procedures include paraffin embedding, sectioning, and basic staining. Students receive laboratory instructions on the use, safety, and troubleshooting of a microtome. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) hand staining will be performed and evaluated. Troubleshooting basic staining will be reviewed. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HSTO 103 - Tissue Fixation and Processing


    2 Credit(s).

    Explains the functions, actions, and factors that affect the quality and choice of fixative. Topics include simple and compound fixatives, coagulant and non-coagulant fixatives, and aqueous and no aqueous fixatives along with various procedures of histology requiring fixation. Students identify fixation pigments, artifacts, and troubleshooting methods. The course examines tissue processors with regards to reagents used, maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as tissue processing and special techniques in processing of decalcification and frozen sectioning. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HSTO 104 - Embedding, Microtomy, and Staining


    3 Credit(s).

    Explains the embedding of tissue processed by paraffin, factors in the choice of paraffin, melting points and influence on support. Students review the ultrastructure of the cell and the differences between nuclear and cytoplasmic staining. In addition, topics include theory of staining and impregnation, compassion of natural and synthetic dyes, examine types and uses for hematoxylin and differentiation between progression, regressive and polychromatic staining. Troubleshooting issues with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining and contrast resinous media versus aqueous media will be explored. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HSTO 106 - Special Staining I

    Explores the use of a variety of introductory special stains, dyes, and techniques to highlight individual tissue components once an Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stain is evaluated. The student demonstrates the purpose, principles, reagents, controls, troubleshooting, and results of each special stain.  Learning theory and techniques employed in the histology laboratory prepares the students to successfully integrate greater skills to enter the field of Histotechnology. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HSTO 155 - Histology Practicum I


    3 Credit(s).

    Provides the student with entry-level clinical experience in a histopathology laboratory. The student acquires a working knowledge of sectioning specimens, processing schedules, paraffin embedding of tissue, routine staining, mounting techniques and troubleshooting. After demonstration proficiency, students may be permitted to perform procedures under qualified supervision. Students participate in the supportive functions of instrument operation, quality control, troubleshooting and problem solving. Procedures are performed according to documented methodology, policy and protocol established for routine and specialized areas. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HSTO 206 - Special Staining II


    2 Credit(s).

    Explores the use of a variety of advanced special stains, dyes and techniques to highlight individual tissue components once an Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stain is evaluated. The student demonstrated the purpose, principles, reagents, controls, troubleshooting, and results of each special stain.  Learning the theory and techniques employed in histology laboratory prepares the students to successfully integrate greater skills to enter the field of Histotechnology.   • HSTO 255 - Histology Practicum II


    3 Credit(s).

    Provides the student with clinical experiences in special stains that will include carbohydrates, amyloid, connective tissue, muscle, and lipids. Throughout the practicum, the students continue sectioning specimens, paraffin embedding of tissue, routine staining, mounting techniques and troubleshooting.  After demonstrating proficiency, students may be permitted to perform procedures under qualified supervision. Students participate in the supportive functions of instrument operation, quality control, troubleshooting and problem solving. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

    Provides the student with clinical experiences in the histopathology laboratory applying and integrating theory, skills, and concepts regarding microorganisms, pigments, and minerals and neural tissue. The student builds upon the techniques learned in previous practicums and demonstrates special stains that include microorganisms, nerve and lipids, along with participate in the supportive functions of instrument operation, quality control, troubleshooting and problem solving.   • HSTO 257 - Histology Practicum IV

    Provides the student with clinical experiences in the histopathology laboratory applying and integrating theory, skills, and concepts regarding special stains. The practicum concentrates on immunohistochemistry methods as the student participates in the supportive functions of instrument operation, quality control, troubleshooting and problem solving.   • HSTO 260 - Trends in Histotechnology


    2 Credit(s).

    Introduces new practice developments, emerging technologies, and “hot topics” in the current literature within the scope of practice of the histology technician. The course also includes a comprehensive review of the major discipline areas within the histology technician curriculum to prepare the student for the national certification examination. The course provides career preparation with regard to resume writing and interviewing skills. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HRMT 101 - Introduction to Hospitality Management

    This course welcomes students into the exciting and diverse hospitality and tourism industry. While providing an understanding of the scope and complexity of the industry, the course covers key hospitality issues, management definitions, and career opportunities available in restaurants, hotels, beverages operations, casinos, theme venues, entertainment centers, cruise lines, and countless other hospitality and tourism business.   • HRMT 102 - Sanitation and Safety


    2 Credit(s).

    Covers the principles and practices of sanitation and hygiene as applied to the food service industry, emphasizing the training of supervisory personnel in sanitation procedures. Students will have the opportunity to earn the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s National Sanitation (ServSafe) Certificate. This certification is required by the county health administration for all establishments providing food to the public in Baltimore County. NOTE: Course offered only in Summer.

  
  • HRMT 103 - Dining Room Management

    This course examines the detailed operation of a restaurant dining room. Topics include types of table service, dining room organization and table settings, staffing, responsibilities of dining room personnel, customer sales and service, and the design and usage of menus.   • HRMT 166 - Gaming Law


    3 Credit(s).

    Course provides an analysis of Federal and State law governing legalized gaming. The powers of state and federal regulatory agencies over gaming are examined and the underlying reasons for the regulations and the methods used to ensure the integrity of the gaming industry. The current and future trends in gaming, including the expansion of gaming domestically and on the internet. Students will learn how to gather and analyze the information necessary to predict trends in the gaming industry. A skill that is essential to the continued success of a gaming operation.   • HRMT 201 - Food Production I


    3 Credit(s).

    This course serves as an introductory course in food production for hospitality managers. Students will explore basic cooking techniques, preparation utensils and equipment, and product evaluation. This is an interactive lab course giving students the opportunity to use a hands-on approach to cooking in almost every class meeting. No previous culinary skills are required.   • HRMT 202 - Food Production II

    This course serves as an intermediate course in food production for hospitality managers. Students will build upon skills and knowledge gained in Food Production I and prepare more advanced menu offerings. This is an interactive lab course giving students the opportunity to use a hands-on approach to cooking in almost every class meeting. NOTE: Course offered once a year (fall or spring).

  • HRMT 204 - Entrepreneurship in Hospitality and Tourism

    This course explores the many exciting opportunities available for individuals interested in opening a restaurant, bar, hotel, or other hospitality and tourism business. Topics include entrepreneurial characteristics, assessing the viability of small hospitality and tourism business ventures, risks, the business planning process, feasibility studies, formation of business plans, the management of small enterprises, record keeping, and personnel management.   • HRMT 205 - Principles of Hospitality Franchise Management

    This course examines franchising in the hospitality industry from both the franchiser and franchisee’s point of view. Students examine start-up, organization, franchiser/franchisee relations, cooperative marketing, legal issues, and daily operations, with an orientation toward the small business franchisee in a variety of hospitality and tourism businesses.   • HRMT 206 - Beverage Management


    3 Credit(s).

    This course studies the classification, production, identification, and service of beers, wines, and distilled spirits in the hospitality industry. Students learn the historical, legal, and social implications of alcoholic beverages. Other topics covered include beverage purchasing, bar setup, and beverage operation management.     This course explores the operation of the front desk of a hotel with a constant consideration for hospitable guest service.   • HRMT 209 - Housekeeping Management

    This course examines the management of housekeeping in hospitality operations. While primarily designed to cover issues related to hotels, this course is beneficial to anyone in the hospitality industry. Topics will include management of cleaning functions; staffing; sanitation requirements and standards procedure development and supervision, material; equipment and supply administration; and facility, asset, and staff protection.   • HRMT 210 - Travel, Leisure, and the Tourism Industry


    3 Credit(s).

    Introduces the global travel and tourism industry; covers tourist behavior, tourism’s impact on the community, economic implications, marketing, and trends such as eco-tourism or green tourism. Also discusses the travel business as a whole, including travel modes, accommodations, safety and health while traveling, trip planning, trip packagers or wholesalers, and the necessary qualities of a tour director. Employs computer applications and world geography throughout. 3 lecture hours and 1 laboratory hour per week.     Provides an overview of healthy aging and wellness promotion throughout the life continuum. This course explores the physiological, psychological, environmental, and financial changes associated with the aging process. Topics include physical wellness, mental health, housing options, medical care, retirement, assisted living/long-term care options, ethical treatment of the elderly, and the stereotypes and myths held in society toward an aging population.     Builds on drafting skills introduced in INTD 111 and further develops interior design skills through residential space planning, the design project process, and conceptual design to creating construction documents. Residential typologies are explored along with their relationship to human behavior, ergonomics, and the psychological and physiological needs of the end-user. Aging in place, universal design, and sustainable practices are also addressed within the residential context. Although, site visits are not the exclusive learning experience and must be supplemented by more conventional learning methods such as lectures and reading, this course relies predominately on contact with the country visited.
